There are few mini-games as iconic as the fishing mini-game, and the one in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is among the very best. Sure, it’s not the most complex out there, but its blissful in its simplicity. And underneath that simplicity lies a much more intricate offering than many expect. For example, did you know that there’s special types of fish you can catch? Well there are a few actually. So here’s a rundown of how to catch Blooper, Cheep Cheep, and Big Fish in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.

How to Catch Big Fish

First off, if this is your first run at the fishing mini-game in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake for Switch you might want to check out our guide on how to fish in general. Those mechanics are key to the rest of this guide, so be sure you’re familiar with them all before diving deeper (pun intended) into the special fish. But those tips mostly focus on just landing the first fish you can. What about the big green Lunkers or the special varieties?

Let’s start with just the Big Fish, which show up as green and come in two sizes. There’s also a massive blue fish named Ol’ Baron, and the tips for these guys apply to him as well. First off, almost every time you go to the fishing pond you’ll find at least one or two green Big Fish available to catch. The closer they are to shore the easier they are to land, so focus on them if you’re not trying to catch a specific one. Once you have them on the line you should mash A as quickly as possible to reel them in, but only until they face away from you and start fighting back. Once they do this you should ease off, only tapping every second or so to keep them close, otherwise they’ll break away. Repeat this process and you’ll pull them ashore and receive your prize.

How to Catch Blooper

Now it’s time to dig into the truly special fish found in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. The method is pretty similar, but let’s start with Blooper, the squid creature from Mario. First off, Blooper won’t show up every time you head to the fishing pond. It’s a random event, but there is a way to know if something special is going on. Any time you go to the fishing pond and it has a bright light shining in the middle that means there’s a special fish around. It could be Blooper, Cheep Cheep, or just some larger fish, but if you see it it means you should head there and check things out.

If Blooper isn’t there you can attempt to get him to spawn by clearing away the other fish. From experience, he seems to prefer the middle of the pond in terms of depth, so catch anything in that region and hope he shows up. Once he does, you want to follow all the usual instructions of getting the lure in front of him and getting his attention by flicking the left thumbstick. Once he bites just follow the same procedure as reeling in a big fish, but pay special attention to how the Blooper is swimming. When he’s jumping out of the water or swimming away you need to back off on mashing A or he’ll break away. Be patient and work to pull him in without getting too crazy with your reel and you should get him in no time.

How to Catch Cheep Cheep

Cheep Cheep follows almost the exact same process. Head to the fishing pond and see if there’s a light. If so go ahead and start fishing. If you need a Cheep Cheep and he’s not there you should try to clear out the top to middle row of fish to see if he’ll spawn there. Once he does it’s the same method as always, but pay special attention to when he leaps out of the water. If you continue to press A to reel him in he can get away very easily at this point, so be sure to pause while the Cheep Cheep is out of the water. Follow all the usual methods and you’ll land Cheep Cheep, Ol’ Baron, Blooper, or any other Big Fish in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake for Switch.
